Daily Summaries: A new level of randomness 12: Pass the Spark

“Spiritual Fire” – “Worship Helps Us” – “Supernatural” – “Opportunity is Fatigue” – “Today Featuring…” – “Here I am” – “Pass it on”

So, I have decided I can blog while I nap. Not really, but my work brain finished for the day about 5 minutes too early and I left to take a nap. So, I only moved my chair four feet, but I am now not working. Last week was a big washout from blogging as I had not learned to do so while napping. Maybe I have found a new way to be productive.

As I read through these phases, “Pass it on” rang as a part of a song in my head. I had a faint recollection of it being from my Aggie Awakening days, and as I read them, I am only uncertain because I cannot remember them.  Big D can remember words to songs, but she did not get that from me. I will include the words at the end so I can pass it on.

“Here I am” is of course a favorite because I see the image of the little boy running to his master to say, “Here I am”. I was glad to have learned about Samuel at a young age and while I have often not recognized God calling me, I have set out to follow Him when I do.

“Today Featuring…” also brings back memories of childhood. I get the impression it was from one tv show or another, but the idea was that each day had something new or different. Our lives are like that today and no matter how much little d is dreading three days of Star testing, every day is its own and God has blessed us with new opportunities that will not be there the next.

I want to end on “Opportunity is Fatigue”, but I have no idea what I meant so that seems counter intuitive. A friend once had a job to make cold calls. It was a terrible job with a string of failures all but assured each day. Many years and many jobs later, my friend has no problem picking up the phone and asking anyone for anything he needs. It was character building. Calvin (of Calvin and Hobbes) is always complaining that his dad gets him to do stuff that is character building. God does the same thing to all of us. He prepares us for our future duties by our current ones. Arguing over a few pounds of steel no longer seems applicable to my life, but years of doing so makes me a better judge of what is important in engineering that is not obvious to the non-technical.

“Worship helps us” seem obviously true, but so often its first connotation is of serving God for His benefit. And make no mistake I think the first goal of worship should be to give praise to God, but it is not a zero-sum game. So much of the world is focused on scarcity and gaining advantage that the mutual benefit of worship can be overlooked. The music can be too loud, too long, and too new, but if we can get past the headache and tune in to the relationship of our soul to God, it can be wonderful.

“Supernatural” almost feels like a recent repeat, so I will keep it brief. God is supernatural. If you do not know so, you have missed something. Go figure it out.

“Spiritual Fire” – This is often associated with new Christians who are gung ho. I do not tend to think of people I run across over and over at church as on spiritual fire. Some are. But often, I see people in need struggling to catch a spark. (This is spooky seeing the first two lines of the song on the next page. Yes, I read them earlier, but I had not planned it this way.) I need to be that spark. You need to be that spark. God is alive in us. We are alive because of Him. We need to let it out. Take your spark. Pass it on.

Pass It On – Lryics by Kurt Kaiser (according to the internet)

It only takes a spark

To get a fire going

And soon all those around

Can warm up in its glowing

That’s how it is with God’s love

Once you’ve experienced it

You spread His love to ev’ryone

You want to pass it on

What a wondrous time is spring

When all the trees are budding

The birds begin to sing

The flowers start their blooming

That’s how it is with God’s love

Once you’ve experienced it

You want to sing it’s fresh like spring

You want to pass it on

I wish for you my friend

This happiness that I’ve found

You can depend on Him

It matters not where you’re bound

I’ll shout it from the mountain top

I want my world to know

The Lord of love has come to me

I want to pass it on
