Holding Hope – Job 134 Study 121: Job 7:6

Job 7:6

My days are swifter than the weaver’s shuttle,

They end in the absence of thread (Hope).

Every day has enough trouble of its own. I read a verse like that yesterday and today I know it is true. Yesterday was a battle. Today has been a battle. Everyday might very well be a battle. If everyday ended with no hope, then surely, we would have a hard time not worrying about tomorrow.

“Fly faster” was the only variation in the first stitch and only by one source. I kept “swifter”, but neither was wrong.

“Snapoff” was a variation for “end” that fits better with the weaver’s shuttle, but I kept the simpler option. Other options were “give out” and “are spent”, neither wrong, just not preferred. I chose “in the absence of” rather than the simpler ”without” as it seemed more encompassing.

The biggest learning was that the Hebrew word translated as “hope” was more accurately “thread” and the tie of meanings hope and thread are not at all captured in English. I used both to make sure the meaning and the tie to the first stitch was retained.

I have hope. Hope in Christ. I sure do not have it in much of anything else these days. I do not need it in anything else, but it is nice to have. My business model is cyclical and therefore my income in cyclical. I trust in God, but the angst grows the more money is going out and the less is coming in.  I am anticipating doors opening in the near future and I wonder where God will call me. I have to balance my human nature to want more and my servant nature to follow no matter the money. Job had no hope. He was dependent upon God, felt God had abandoned him, and knew not what to do. Job’s condition is not unlike what we face everyday. The goal is total reliance on God. The goal is an easy one to say, but a hard one to swallow. I am glad that God forgives and I have faith that He will lead.
