Job 38

Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind, saying:

Who are you to darken my plan,

   With words lacking in knowledge?

Gird up your loins like a fighting man,

   I will question you,

      And I will inform me.

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?

Tell me, if you have any understanding.

Who marked off its measure, if you know,

Who stretched the plumb line upon it?

Upon what were its foundations set?

   Who laid out its cornerstone?

When the morning stars sang together,

And all the children of God shouted for joy?

Who barred the sea with double gates,

When it burst forth from the womb?

When I made the clouds its garment,

   Thick darkness its swaddling bands.

When I prescribed my limits for it,

Setting for its gates a bar.

Saying, ‘This far you shall come and no farther,

Here shall your (proud) waves be stayed.

Have you commanded the morning since your days began,

Cause the dawn to know its place,

That you might take hold of the skirts of the earth,

That the wicked be shaken from it.

They are turned as clay into the mire,

They stand out, without a covering.

Thus light is withheld from the wicked,

   Their upraised arm is broken.

Have you penetrated to the foundations of the sea,

Traveled the recesses of the deep?

Have the gates of death been laid bare to you?

Have you seen the gates of deep darkness?

Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?

   Declare if you know all!

Where is the way to the dwelling of light?

Where to the place of darkness.

That you may guide each to its domain?

That you may discern the path to its dwelling?

Surely, you know because of when you were born?

Because the number of your days is great?

Have you penetrated the stores of snow,

Seen the stores of hail stones,

Which I have reserved for the time of trouble,

For the day of war and battle?

In what way are the West winds dispersed?

Or the East winds spread over the earth?

Who cut a channel for the torrents,

   A path for the thunderbolt,

In order to bring rain to uninhabited lands,

To the wilderness where no one lives,

To sate the desolate wasteland,

To make the ground sprout grass?

Has the rain a father?

Who begot the drops of dew?

From whose womb did the ice come forth?

The frost of heaven, who has given birth to?

The waters become unseen, like stone,

The face of the deep is solidified.

Can you bind fast the cluster of the Pleiades?

Can you loosen the belt of Orion?

Can you bring forth the constellations in season?

Guide the bear with its cubs?

Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?

Can you establish dominion over the earth?

Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,

So that an abundance of waters may cover you?

Can you command the lightnings to go forth?

Will they say to you, ‘Here we are.’

Who has endowed the Ibis with wisdom?

   Given understanding to the rooster?

Who can layout the clouds in wisdom?

Who can lay over the water holders of the heavens?

Cause the dust to flow into a hard mass?

   Cleave the clouds fast together?

Can you hunt for prey for the lion,

   Satisfy the lions appetite,

When they crouch in their lair,

Lie in ambush hiding in the thicket?

Who provides the raven its prey,

When its young cry to God,

      Wandering about lacking food?
