Job 79: Study 64: Job 5:10 – Beaches and Whales

Job 5:10

Who bestows rain on the earth,

   Sends water upon the fields.

As I write this, I am on vacation at the beach trying to balance the desire to see whales (which I just did as the exact second I started to type that) with the drive to people watch and the desire to talk to companions and the desire to read my book. Just like any another day except for the “things” change. There is always the desire to do nothing, but I am beginning to see that as a flaw and want to eliminate it from the choices.

Speaking of choices, “gives” and “brings” failed to display the power of God as much as “bestows”, but I have always categorized the phrase “Bringer of Rain” to be an aspect of only God and dislike when it is used otherwise. There is a baseball player that has been tagged with that nickname and as much as I might like him, I do not for his nickname. My poet source used “ Who puts the rain on the face of the earth.” I liked that, but not as scripture.

The only other choice in the passage was “on the fields”, “upon the countryside”, or “upon the open places”. I split the difference and have no real logic behind it. In the end, this is a short simple verse attempting to give God the glory or providing rain and water, when and where He wants. We see many times of famine impact the events in the Old Testament, and the potential for lack of rain forces the civilized man to cooperate across great areas to ensure survival and sustenance.

At dinner last night, we spoke of politics and the impact one senator is currently having on the future of our country. I can say that I have prayed for this man to stick to what is right, but of course I am biased as to what is right and have not prayed as much for the extremists that seek to destroy the aspects of my country I believe in.

The sand of the beach, the swimming animals large enough to swallow a man whole, the sun, and the sea are all aspects of creation that God seeks to show us His power and also aspects of His scripture that God seeks to teach us more about Him. As I move through the pieces on what I have been learning recently, I see the depths and abounding love that God gave to me, and the excess He has for me to share. I pray someone somewhere benefits from this beyond just myself.
