The next chapter in the book about mastering life is titled “Just for Today”. Its an interesting component of the pattern of being about your father’s business as it seems it could be a pattern of its own. It almost seems to align with a feel I have for the words “irrational numbers.”
Irrational number can be defined as numbers that are not rational. (Duh.) They do have to be real numbers and not imaginary, but its hard to think about an irrational imaginary number, is it not. What it really means is that you cannot use two integers to express the ratio of the irrational number. 10/3 is rational. The ratio π of a circle’s circumference to its diameter is not rational because the relationship cannot be defined by 9/3 or 10/3, but is some fixed value between these two rational numbers. The coolest irrational number of all (to me) is π as the simple circle highlights the infinitely diverse decimal representation (pattern) that I believe points to a creator of the universe.
The book makes it clear that the concept of Just for Today as promoted in the Bible is inseparable from the concept of being about the Father’s business. God created the world in six individual days and then rested on the seventh day. Christ taught us to pray for our “daily bread,” and the Bible teaches us to not worry about tomorrow for today has enough opportunity of its own. Today is enough to bring Glory to God and to produce fruit, so the book teaches us to take life one day at a time.
As I have mentioned before, a phrase I learned once was “Present and engaged.” My boss told me I was always there which was good, but that I always seemed to be paying attention to something else. He asked me to be both present and engaged in what was going on. He was a pretty good boss, and I could have learned a ton more from him if I had been focused on each day individually.
Colossians 3:23 tells us “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” This is in direct opposition to the phrase “Good enough for government work.” I often end manual tasks with the good enough sentiment because my manual skills are so poor. One of the tasks for today is manual, so I have enlisted a handy friend to help get it right the first time.
Good enough was not acceptable for those men building the temple, so God gave them ability to excel in their work. He also makes the skills to excel in His work available to us on a day by day basis. Practice doing today what God has before you to please Him and know that He will provide.
