Salvation – Study of Job 9:17

Job 9:17

He crushes me for a trifle,

He wounds me much without cause.

(Written 8/25, Posted 8/26, Job 189)

Once we got back from our dropout trip, we have been trying to up our daily intake of water. The hope is that it will become a habit and we will be healthier. So far it has been a bust and boom cycle as I seem to drink a full 24-ounce bottle all at once every four hours and feel stuffed for a little too long each time.

In this verse, Job is summarizing his stance for his case. I have read the last five chapters of Job over the last five days during my chapter a day of the bible plan, and I must admit it was a little underwhelming. I assume I just have that much more to learn before I get there to study it.

The only option for “crush” was “breaketh” and so I went with the common option. “For a trifle” was also “with a tempest”, “with a storm”, and “for a hair”. I rejected the tempest and storm options as they were a how and not a why. I preferred the trifle over the more concrete hair simply due to the more vivid language.

“Wounds” was also “bruises”, but only one had bruises and wounds seemed better. “Much” was also “multiplies” or “increases” or “makes many”, but much had a broader impact that I felt might be intended. “Without cause” was also “for no reason” and “for nothing/naught”.  I simply felt cause was more accurately portraying the feeling that Job did nothing to initiate the condition.

I have read many books in my years that I have enjoyed. I have watched many movies that I have not. I often wonder why so many books I like are not made into movies that I enjoy. One thought is that the people with money in Hollywood can neither read nor understand what the audience enjoys.

One great story first told in book form and then matched in movie form was Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed both although the movies came long after the author was dead. Game of Thrones was a book series that became a highly decorated TV series. I never read those books and I noticed that the author quit writing the books once the TV series got rolling. I saw reviews trashing the way the Hollywood writers wrapped up the story with no book to go by and how all the fans of the books were disappointed.

In the back of my mind, I see my efforts in Job resulting in a live performance of the material. I just now thought that it could be filmed and be a movie. And of course, along with that came the thought that the whole bible might eventually be converted to a film. My guess is that once computers can be used without actors and tons of man-hours to create “live action scenes”, someone will produce a computer-generated version. But as with the audio version I have and enjoyed listening to, it will pale in comparison to the benefits from sitting alone and reading it.

God created us to relate to Him. Maybe I am too pessimistic about the positive impact a complete visual Bible would have. It would have to have a better impact than all the Hollywood filth the world is binging on now. The world has so many problems to throw at us. I find it so encouraging to know we have been saved from it, are being saved from it, and will be saved from it.
