Study of Job 17:15 – #410 Living Water

Job 17:15

Where then is my hope,

My hope, who can see it?

Today is big estimated tax day. Since I am self-employed, I do not have to send in my taxes every month or so, but have to send them in about once a quarter. Today is the day I need to make my big payment to avoid underpayment penalties. The only thing about the real tax day that is worse is that I have to finish paying taxes for the previous year and make my first quarterly payment for the current year. But, we only pay taxes on income, so at least there is that.

The first stitch was almost the same in every source.

Same for the second.

When I was young, I was taught that our hope is in Jesus. Without Jesus, we and all we do are without merit. Someone in our lives is struggling to drink water. For the first time I saw someone who needed the living water of Jesus to flow through them in the way their physical thirst for water was not evident. I have seen someone in pain ready to die, and I have heard about people who just do not care enough to live. But this was the first time I might have seen that.

For most of civilized history, the family took care of the aged in their own homes once the aged could no longer live on their own. The family was the backbone of society. But uncivilized cultures existed as well where both the young and the old were treated poorly. Now within the civilized world around us, the aged live in seclusion away from the family, and the young are looked at as burdens of choice.

I see this verse as something that could come right out of the mouth of the someone I am discussing. ‘Where is my hope?” My only answer is “In Jesus.” I am an introvert and need rest after dealing with people. I had to go to bed just after eight last night. But even as an introvert, I know I need to interact with others to have a life worth living. My prayer today is that this someone remembers who Jesus is and asks Him for the drive to stay alive, to drink water, and to let the living water flow through them. We all need that.
