Study of Job 18:3 – #413 Acting like dumb beasts

Job 18:3

Why are we regarded as beasts?

   Considered stupid in your eyes?

At Bible study this morning, we touched on the friction between the political spectrum and the lack of good exemplified by each side. To answer this verse’s questions, I would say because you act like uncivilized beasts and act as if you were stupid. My stereotype of Bildad is probably uncivilized and stupid because of this verse. Maybe he would be a popular politician if he lived today.

‘Regarded’ was also ‘counted’, ‘thought of’, ‘reckoned’ and ‘accounted’. But the stitch was also ‘why are we acting as dumb beasts’. This of course comes from my least favorite source, but he has captured the spirit of the stitch. ‘Beasts’ was also ‘cattle’, ‘brutes’, and ‘animals’.

‘Considered’, was also ‘regarded’ and ’thought of’. ‘Stupid’ was also ‘vile’, ‘blocked’, and ‘besotted’. ‘In your eyes’ was also ‘in your sight’ or left off.

In the latest reaction to the death of a political activist, a government employee has forced a company seeking approval for the purchase of another company to force a comedian off the air. This is total censorship and overstepping of legal authority, and it is happening with no hiding required. Our country should be furious over this government action and the motives behind it. The biggest problem is that both sides of the spectrum seem to not care what the middle thinks and is just opposing the other side full stop.

One of the aspects that I see in the situation is that the shooter has been presented as a fanatical player of online games and each side is pushing that he was indoctrinated by someone. The easiest answer is the old warning that as kids grow up playing fantasy games, they cannot understand the difference in reality and kill without understanding the wrongness of the action. People are killed all day long in the inner cities and in third world countries ruled by warlords; yet the political warfare going on over this one killing is rocking the world.

I do not want to learn about the victim. I do not want to learn about the shooter. I want to learn about how Jesus is calling me to love my neighbor amidst all this rage. I know I cannot change the political landscape on my own. I doubt God will call me into politics no matter how I might disagree with our vaccine czar. But I know I am called to do something. I just need to wait for clear direction.
