Random XV – Times 10, the 150th (BLOG)

I realized the other day that I had taken over the “Randoms” with the lessons when I taught the high schoolers. After today, the lessons will get their own title and I will go back to random being random.

This is my 150th blog since the revamp and I am pretty happy with the consistency with which I have been able to do this. It is all relative, but this is better than ever for me. I should probably tell you about the time I went 150 mph, but since I never got over 142…

Jesus, Girls, Money, Fast Cars, … oh, and … has been the theme since I first started with the Astros blog and after a discussion with a friend, I wanted to review why.

  • Priorities – This list is the order in which I have tried to prioritize my life.
  • Jesus – Number one priority.
  • Girls – Wife, two daughters, two sisters, next level of priorities.
  • Money – Money itself is not a priority but earning enough to take care of my obligations to the higher priorities puts this here and high on the list of how I spend my time and why.
  • Fast Cars – Really more about the theme than how high my cars play a role in my life. I do have fast cars, but I do not necessarily drive them fast or have them to impress others, but I do like having them and using them more than I would an old 86 Civic hatchback (my first car).
  • My Hobbies – My hobbies once were all about baseball and baseball cards. I still like both, but the Astros have disappointed me in several manners, and it is hard to enjoy collecting when the “hobby” is so focused on money.

When the Apostle Paul learned who Christ was, he went away and studied scripture until his heart was filled with the knowledge of what the Old Testament was about and how Jesus fulfilled it all. Then he went and followed his calling to share. Sometimes I feel as if I am still trying to study, but I know I do not have the same call as Paul did on my life. I am trying to make that next level of transition to put God into my life and I pray that I am hearing the call correctly.

One paragraph back to the old Astros days. Dusty Baker stepped in and took the Astros to the edge of the World Series last year. I did not see a game in person, and I saw very few if any during the regular season. The regular season was terrible, but they still made the playoffs. This year, the team is phenomenally talented and the best in the AL. Their record is not. I have been protesting and seen very little on tv, but now that I have, Dusty Baker is the reason the Astros record is not running away with the league. He cannot manage a bullpen. He needs to be sent home before he destroys the team. If I cared enough, I would pray for that, but it seems I care less than since I learned about baseball in the first place.

One paragraph on baseball cards. I recently went to a big card show for the first time in a while. I do not recall which cards I got, I know I got nothing of significance, and I know I did not get any good deals. All in all (that phrase again), from a card standpoint, it was a total bust. However, over the years I have gotten to know a handful of guys through cards, and I got to see and talk to them for a bit while I was there. I remember that. We mainly talked cards, but we talked about life and other things as well. I enjoyed that aspect of the card show. I rarely step out of my comfort zones to meet new people, but at one point each of these were new people to me.

My hobbies. Since I do not go to or watch Astros games and I spend a significantly smaller time on baseball cards than since 2004, I wondered what my hobbies really were now. Anyone care enough to guess? If so, post a comment.

Happy 4th of July. Thank God for the country we have.
