Job 20:7
At the height of his triumph, he will perish forever,
Those who have seen him will ask “Where is he?”.
I have struggled with how to end sentences with quotes that end at the end of the sentence. My learning left me with the impression that the punctuation at the end of the quote was enough. But that never looked right to me. Today, I put what I thought looked right and Word did not balk. I nominally guess Word was wrong, but I decided to leave it for now.
I basically copied ‘height of his triumph’ (and everything else) from my favorite source as it differed from every other one with out the use of ‘stool’, ‘turd’, ‘dung’, and ‘refuse’. Mainly because it fits the context of the previous verse and was not offensive. I did keep ‘perish’ over ‘be lost’ or ‘destroyed’.
The second stitch was basically unanimous.
Yesterday, one of my favorite players made the hall of fame: Andruw Jones. He came up with the Braves when I was playing fantasy baseball and after Nolan Ryan had retired. Hitting homeruns in the playoffs and World Series at the age of 19 sealed the deal for me, but he was also a great defender in center and put up great stats for my fantasy team for more than long enough to earn his spot. The fact that it came almost the last year that voters could vote was upsetting, but he did have a domestic incident and played for years after he was no longer the best.
His career almost fits this ‘At his height he falls and people asked what happened to him?’ scenario. But the same thing happened to Dale Murphy and to some degree Lance Berkman. Players at these levels want to be the best, and as they say ‘Age is undefeated.” I watched Andruw Jones play a lot with the great Braves teams he was on and TBS beaming them everywhere. Those teams now have Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, McGriff, and Andruw and Chipper in the hall of fame. They were all great players, but Biggio, Bagwell, and Berkman were as famous and put up similar numbers. I hope Berkman makes it someday from the committee side.
The topic is about the lack of substance of achieving worldly success as compared to earning rewards in heaven for our efforts. I do not want fame and all its trappings. I want to know that I have helped others learn about and develop a relationship with Christ. I do not what random people to ask ‘Where is he?”, but I do want people I loved to know that I am with Jesus. That would be my forever triumph.
