Study of Job 19:18 – #418 For the Proper Audience

Job 19:18

Even young children find me revolting,

When I appear, they ridicule me.

I had a dream that I was younger and had a conversation with a friend. I awoke and found we were no longer friends on Facebook. I wasn’t sure whether I had posted something on Facebook that made them de-friend me or maybe they just dumped Facebook like I want to do. Turns out they dumped me.

‘Young children’ was also ‘youngsters’ or ‘little ones’. ‘Find me revolting’ was also ‘despise me’, ‘scorn me’, or ‘disdain me’.

‘Appear’ was also ‘arise’ or ‘standup’. ‘Ridicule’ was also ‘talk against’, or ‘make fun of’.

The oldest kid and I were talking about weddings, funerals, and alter calls. My daily devotional touched on being persecuted for doing what God calls you to do. She and I were adamant that we want to do what God calls us to, and we need to be ready to deal with the outcomes, especially those that we do not expect.

The less mature me would be offended that my former friend dumped me on Facebook. In reality, I do not know their motivation, but I myself purged a bunch of people a long time ago and it had nothing to do with them, just with where I was in my walk. If they were offended, they didn’t reach out and inquire, so no loss. However, many people may have dumped me, I didn’t inquire as to why either, so no loss, apparently.

One of the main topics brought up by Facebook for me is the lack of personal touch it put into the relationships that I had before it. Everything was group think, and the one-on-one was eliminated in favor of sharing with way too many people. None of my friends needed to know I went to some beach again for vacation, and none of my acquaintances wanted to hear me tell them they need Jesus. I sometimes see posts by my cousin who has served in various church leadership roles, and I know that they are meant for those he has a personal relationship with and are not for the masses.

When I read this book on habits that I have been going through, then author was very impressed with his public success from his blog. I had a blog too, and I knew people read it, but it was about the Astros, and it did not really sit well with my goals to share Jesus that I try to do with this one. Success now is that I learn from the process and maybe my family learns something. Everyone else might find it revolting or ridicule me for it, but I, like Job, can grow in my faith in God anyway.
