Study of Job 24:8 – #572 Shelter

Job 24:8

Drenched by the mountain rains,

Lacking shelter, clinging to the rocks.

Days like today make we want to not have to work anymore. When Obama care passed, there was a chance for it to help people like me who wanted to have access to affordable care while not working and not old enough for Medicare. Turns out it was a scam to help insurance companies, but it did give me hope. Now the only real thing tying me to the workforce is the potential for health care, and well, getting paid, too.

‘Drenched’ was also ‘wet’ and ‘soaked’. ‘They’ was in most sources but did not seem necessary. ‘Rains’ was also ‘showers’ or ‘streams’.

‘Clinging’ was also ‘hugging’, ‘huddle around’, and ‘embrace’. ‘Lacking’ was also ‘without’ and ‘for want of’.

Remembering that this is about me and my walk with God, I am struggling with how much of what God has provided is to provide for me and mine as we continue to live. I have read a bunch about how men die soon after stopping working. If so, why don’t I just spend it all and die happy? I know I have a duty to provide for my kids, but one is off the books in a week or so and the other has less than two years until high school is over. I could spend it all and let her figure college out on her own.

The gap of course is that I have a wife I am responsible to. I am her and she is me. I cannot fail to provide for her and meet my commitments before God. My want is to provide enough for her to live the way she feels led until the end.

Our place to stay over the weekend was a simple three-bedroom house. In overall size, similar to what I grew up in (without a garage) and half the size of what I live in. It was very functional, if you don’t want to store any stuff in it. It was more than shelter against the rain, but it pushes me to reconsider what size of place I need for the future. We bought this house a long time ago for more than a fair price for us, but I feel a long-term call to something simpler and I wonder if it is in place of or in addition to. Might be a long wait for an answer to that.
