Study of Job 21:12 – #498 Sing

Job 21:12

They sing with the timbrel and lyre,

Rejoice with the sound of pipes.

Yesterday was a good day. I felt like I did the things I needed to and ignored the things I did not. I got to see the little one perform on the violin at school and eat dinner with my favorite person. Since I was traveling, I got to listen to a bunch of songs I like. Now with this verse, I realize that I could have spent time listening to more songs about Jesus and God than I did.

Three sources left off singing and indicated carrying, taking or striking the instruments rather than singing with them. The instruments were also called drums and harps, or tambourine,

‘Rejoice’ was also ‘make merry’, ‘revel’, or be ‘gleeful’. ‘Pipes’ was also ‘flute’, or the really wrong ‘organ’.

I saw a cat out on a fence yesterday and wondered if it was waiting for its favorite horse to come by. I had seen interactions on social media, and wondered if I might get to see the real thing. We were in a truck speeding from one place to another (I was not driving) so the odds were low, but it got my attention. It would seem the good stuff doesn’t happen often, and the rarity makes it worth enjoying when it does happen.

I used to listen to music all the time, and at some point, bought a number of ‘albums’ of Christian music I liked so that I could listen to it more. Now that I go through the day with little if any music, it has become special when I bother to do so. I do have a strong preference for music I like, and an even stronger preference for music I already know I like. Same with ‘church’ music; I like the hymns I like, and I really like to hear them in church rather than a chant built around a few famous or popular phrases.

When I was younger, I was a scout and an explorer. I joined those groups to learn new things, do so with my friends, and to just go do the things I liked. Our church has similar terms about roles the people partake in. I like being part of the one aligned with the scouting and exploring, but not so much in my music.

Happy Cinco de Mayo.
