Job 21:26

Alike, they lie in the dust,

   Both blanketed by maggots.

 

I am on vacation at some friends’ lake house. It is a normal weekend for them, but a time away for me. I am not really being productive on a normal scale, but I am doing things I would not be able to focus on at home. Maybe as I am trying to transition away from the stress of the last few seasons, I can make this a monthly occurrence rather than annual.

‘Alike’ was also ‘side by side’, ‘both’, and ‘together’.

‘Maggots’ was ‘worms’ the other seven times. ‘Blanketed’ was ‘covered’ the other seven times.

This verse needs context to make much sense. ‘They’ here are both the rich and poor. It is not about the wicked or righteous. The scope is that death comes to us all no matter what. Genesis talks about this 3:19 as a result of sin.

As I sit in this house among many multimillion dollar second homes, I do not really feel the impact of war that is active in other parts of the world, even those things like high prices and scarcity do not seem real. I have read stories about the lack of fuel in the Far East, the everyday concern of military strikes on civilians in Ukraine, and all kinds of horrors around Israel. I feel like the ‘hear about wars and rumors of wars’ part of Revelation is upon us.

I have no power in this world, I have no influence in this world, and any assets I might have are to further the Kingdom of God and not help the world. I can pray for peace, but I know that the peace many people seek is just a lack of choice. My peace comes from knowing Christ and trusting that His power will overcome the world and that I can be joyful He has paid the price for my eternal salvation.
