Study of Job 23:4 – #552 Winning

Job 23:4

I would present my case before Him,

   My mouth full of arguments.

The kid’s team played the rivals last night. It was atrocious. Our best players played their worst, out worst players played even worse, and the other team took advantage. I am now sad that the coach isn’t better, but at the same time, I told myself ahead of time it was just a game.

‘Present’ was also ‘lay’, ‘state’, ‘order’, ‘set out’, and ‘lay out’.

Word order had ‘Fill my mouth’, but it just felt wrong and my favorite source had ‘my mouth would not lack’.

After the game, someone took my right of way, and my wife and I got a little testy as a result. I praise God for how well we both recovered and our ‘arguments’ did not cause more grief. I think that is called grace, and I apologized immediately after. I am not better, but I am not behaving terrible all the time.

In my first expert witness case, I knew I was right and couldn’t imagine our side not winning. In my second case, I knew they were wrong, but I had great expectation that we would lose anyway. Both came out ‘my’ way as God was on our side, but it reminded me that no matter how perfect one thinks a case may be, the decision belongs to the judge. In Job’s case this is God, and God knew so much more than Job ever could.

When we think we are prepared for an argument, that is the time to love our neighbor. The time having strength, and to be humble. Our job is not to win the argument, but to win the soul. I was in the right to get my right of way, but I was more right to let the other person have it without the need for contact between vehicles. It was funny to see the guy almost jump out of his skin when I honked and the front of the Armada was so close to his open window. But I can be better.
